Once POST is completed, the bootstrap loader executes The primary function of the loader is to initialize or place a copy of the OS image into main memory To do so, however, the loader must first determine where the image of the OS is located The image could be located on Flash memory, ROM, or even on the network To determine the location of the image of the OS, the bootstrap loader checks the router's configuration register The configuration register's values can be set either by hardware jumpers or via software, depending on the router model The settings of the register indicate the location of the OS and define other device functions, such as how the router reacts to the entry of a break key on the console keyboard and whether diagnostic messages are displayed on the console terminal The configuration register in most current-model routers is a 16-bit value stored in NVRAM and is not a physical entity In older model routers such as the MGS and AGS+, the configuration register was a physical jumper with 16 pins This idea is the origination of the term register On both the software and the hardware configuration registers, the last four bits (pins in the case of the hardware register) indicate the boot field The boot field tells the router where to locate its configuration file The software register is displayed as a four-digit hexadecimal number, which looks similar to 0x2102 You can display the configuration register with the command show version Each hexadecimal number represents four bits, so the first number reading from rightto-left is the Boot field The boot field can range in value from zero to 15 In the earlier example, the boot field is two Following the boot field is a table indicating how the router interprets the number in the boot field Table 6 1: The Meaning of the Boot Field Settings.

One of the pitfalls of networking environments is that the electrical signal that is traveling the wire is weakened over distance as a result of outside interference Eventually, if two systems are too far from one another, the signal is so weak that by the time it reaches the other side it is unreadable This is where repeaters come in

Routers typically are used to connect geographically dispersed networks together, and to make feasible connecting a large number of computers together Before routers became popular, bridges often were used to achieve the same goals Bridges were good for small networks, but had problems working in larger environments Bridges keep track of all the individual computers on a network The problem with using bridges to connect large numbers of computers together is that bridges do not understand network numbers, so any broadcast generated anywhere on the network gets sent everywhere The difference between how routers and bridges handle broadcasts is illustrated in Fig 1-5

Many PC networking systems make extensive use of broadcasts, which leads to bridged networks having significant amounts of their usable bandwidth consumed by broadcasts At this point, it is worth contrasting the routing decisions made by routers and typical workstations or hosts on an internetwork A typical workstation (a PC running a popular TCP/IP stack, for example) will require some manual configuration before it can operate on a TCP/IP network At a minimum, you will have to configure an IP address, a subnet mask, and a default gateway The routing decisions of a workstation configured in this manner are simple If the workstation has to send a packet to another machine that is on the same network number, the packet is sent directly to the destination machine If the destination is on a different network number, the packet is forwarded to the default gateway for routing through the internetwork and on to the final destination

If your network layout exceeds the normal specifications of the cable, you can use repeaters to allow the signal to travel the distance by Because a repeater works placing the repeaters at different points in the with the electrical signal, it is considered a network For example, if you are using thinnet layer-1 device cabling, you know that thinnet is limited to 185 m But what if you want to connect two systems together that are 235 m apart You would place a repeater somewhere before the 185 m mark so that the repeater will regenerate or rebuild the signal, allowing it to travel the extra difference Figure 3-18 shows a signal that is weakened over distance but is regenerated through the use of a repeater
